Do you wonder how in the world

you're going to keep up with technology

and keep your kids safe?

If you're a parent, this is a must-listen episode!

Jamey Tucker and I talk about:

  • The importance of open communication with your kids about tech safety, and creating an environment that allows them to come to you with questions and concerns
  • Secret Locker apps (you need to know about these!)
  • Hidden meanings behind emojis
  • The apps police warn parents about
  • Video chat rooms, and what's happening inside them
  • Why your child should be using your Apple ID, and not have they own
  • The best tool to control what they do online at home - Circle from Disney - that hooks up to your router and is customizable for each person in the family.
  • Mama Bear - mamabearapp.com
  • waituntil8th.org
  • Kindle Fire Tablet vs. iPad - which is safer and which is dangerous
  • Is YouTube Kids safe?
  • And much, much more!

What to watch out for:

  • The app "Kik"
  • Omegle Chat
  • Ask.fm - many very young children are on there, as young as 7 or 8
  • Melon - video streaming app
  • Live.ly - app
  • AND - Why you should search for their friends using these apps

Who is Jamey Tucker?

"I worked in local TV news for 25 years as a reporter and anchor in Huntsville, AL, Memphis, TN and Nashville, TN.
In 2011 I started a side project called "What the Tech?", a daily news segment devoted to stories about consumer technology.
The franchise was picked up by 3 TV stations and in 2015 I left WKRN-TV and began syndicating the segment full-time.

It currently airs on local newscasts in Nashville, Birmingham, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Paducah, KY, Wichita Falls, TX and Bend, OR.
"What the Tech?" has expanded to a daily blog about technology and a daily podcast called "Technology for Normal People".

A few random things about me:
I'm the befuddled reporter in the viral video "Struttin' that A$$" which has amassed millions of views and sparked over 20 auto-tunes and re-mixes.
I was a DJ in clubs and at parties for about 5 years.
I collect record albums and have about 1,300 LPs from rock, country, classical, blues, spoken word, and everything in between.

I live in Hendersonville, TN with my wife. We have three children."

Quotes from Jamey:

  • "I encourage parents, if they find out their kids might be using these apps, to download them yourself to see what's out there... The parent downloads these apps, sets up an account, and then investigates it."
  • "Psychologists recommend kids should not have their own smartphone until the 8th grade."
  • "If you're really worried, look for these devices that will monitor what the kids are doing at home, on their phone, and on their device."
