He is their rowing coach and a former crew member at the University of Michigan. And boy, will he need everything he knows -- He’s already lost his sea anchor, flooded his laptop and broke his boat’s dagger board in several gales that caused him to capsize.Carlson is about 700 miles from Newfoundland, rowing alone to Penzance, England, trying to become the first American to make the trip. Should he finish in fewer than 55 days, it'd be a world record.
