Philadelphia Councilman Mark Squilla, representing the first district, returns to the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a press release he penned regarding the city’s decision to rename Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples’ Day. First, Squilla and Giordano discuss the timing of such a change, and pontificate why Italian-Americans are being largely erased from the history and fabric of Philadelphia. Then, Squilla and Giordano discuss the history of both Christopher Columbus and Columbus Day, making sure to point out that it has never been a day of division and should never have been turned into one. Squilla also notes that this would not be something accepted if done to any other group besides Italian-Americans, and it’s his duty to stand up for what is right and what is wrong.
