CONRAD KOCH is South Africa’s top comedy ventriloquist, and possibly the only one. He is a double International Emmy nominated comedian, most famous for the puppet Chester Missing. Chester Missing has his own TV show, 300k twitter followers and has won numerous awards in his own right, including being the first recipient of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation’s Anti-Racism Award.
Known for his biting satire, Chester Missing has interviewed most of South Africa’s elite from President down, and has held a number of regular radio and TV slots, and even wrote an award-winning book. Conrad’s live shows have received wide political acclaim. The material has an edge and challenging issues like race and apartheid are tackled head on.
In a fascinating, entertaining and educational chat we discuss the South African comedy scene, the current political climate and the role of comedy within it, how some very powerful people have tried to shut Conrad down, what it’s like to be a white South African challenging stereotypes and punching up against the system, and, we discover what Conrad really thinks of his creation Chester Missing.
