A graduate of The Cornell Law School, Walt practiced law in the areas of corporate and commercial litigation and criminal defence and was the managing partner of a law firm for more than 30 years. Walt’s passions are high-altitude mountaineering, ultra-distance running, blue water sailing & adventure photography. He and his wife, the author Ann Sheybani, live in Castletownshend, Ireland.

In today’s episode Walt shares his insights and philosophies on how to approach the working day and the personal 5 hours he carves out before taking his first meeting. He discusses the problem with the concept of Time Management and how he developed a skill set rather for Time Mastery, through a necessity born out of working full time in a law practice while a single dad to three young boys. Walt strips back the fundamental foundations of great coaching to four key functions and explains why communication with prospective clients needs to be established clearly before you begin to work together. He also reveals the core skill all prospective coaches must display before he will accept them onto his coaching program, and why understanding the science of change and leaning into lifelong learning will produce the best coaching practice experiences.

“That whole idea of being an apprentice, being a mentor, looking for a master and becoming part of that community, I think is the first step” – Walt Hampton

“It's really important to have good boundaries. Not only for the work we do, but for the lives we live, and knowing when you're going to start and when you're going to stop is of critical import” – Walt Hampton

“We have the greatest profession on the planet. We get to help people in times of greatest need. We get to help transform businesses. Literally the work that we get to do as coaches has the capacity to change the world and we can't do it in less we're whole and complete ourselves” – Walt Hampton

“If we're going to walk the talk of telling our clients that they ought to invest in themselves, then we need to invest in ourselves” – Walt Hampton

“When we master ourselves then we are masters of our time” – Walt Hampton

“So much of what we do as coaches is to hold space with another human being, creating a safe container to do deep work” – Walt Hampton
