Insulation vs Isolation - a podcast by Jos Willard

It has become more common in modern society to believe that we should never listen to or spend time with someone that disagrees with us. We hear a lot about getting toxic people out of your life, and while there is some truth in the concept, it has been taken too far.  You shouldn't subject yourself to a bombardment of other people's negative opinions, but having people in your life with views different from your own is an excellent thing. But how do you interact with people that don't agree with you? There are people that you care about what they think, but you don't have to invite them to impart their judgment or approve of what you are doing. Use the tools of insulation and isolation instead of screaming and blocking.

Today, I share some tools you can use to maintain positive relationships with friends and family when you disagree. I reveal why we like to put people in various boxes to have certainty in our interactions with them and why it's uncomfortable for people when we (or those we are close to) make changes in their lives. I explain the tools of isolation and insulation and how you can identify the people to apply these to in your life. I also share why there are certain people you will have to isolate from and how insulation can help build closer relationships.

“When we insulate, we stop giving people the ability to approve of whatever it is that we are doing or thinking.” - Jos Willard
