A ransomware-crippled clinic in Düsseldorf, Germany recently turned away an emergency ambulance and rerouted it to another facility many kilometers away. The 78-year-old woman patient, who was suffering an aortic aneurism, died. It's not clear whether quicker medical intervention would have saved her life but there could be many situations when healthy people needing immediate emergency care could become 'victim' of such hacker attacks.
While the hackers, in this case, may never be brought to justice, this serves as a warning of the real-world consequences when criminals target critical systems. What deepens the concern is the growing threat of cyberattacks on hospitals. More than 750 healthcare providers across the United States were targeted by ransomware last year.
The perils of a  "connected" world are dawning.
In India, where news of data security breach has become routine, this serves as a wake-up call to give the issue as much importance as needed, especially to critical systems like hospitals.
