Joe Mavretic was speaker of the N.C. House of Representatives in 1989-90 and served in the House for 14 years. Mavretic is a native of Currituck County who received an English degree from UNC-Chapel Hill and a master's degree in political science from George Washington University. He is also a distinguished graduate of the U.S. Naval War College and is a retired lieutenant colonel in the United States Marine Corps.
