Merry Christmas. In this Bible Study for Progressives Christmas Special, we will read the story of the birth of Jesus and the appearance of the heavenly host to shepherds in the Gospel of Luke, chapter 2, verses 1 to 20. Then we will talk about how God’s preference for the poor is reflected in Luke’s birth narrative.

Then we will be speaking with Shawn Roselius from the Orange County Poor People’s Campaign. We will talk about the poor people’s campaign, the fight against poverty, and how the broader issues facing our world and our current political and ecological crisis are interrelated with the problems of poverty and injustice.

How are we doing here in the United States compared to the global effort to fight poverty? How is the crisis we are in today, the rise of nationalism and authoritarianism, and the decline of democracy affect the struggle against poverty? How are we to confront the powers and authorities of this world with the evils of systemic racism, poverty, war, and ecological devastation?

Join us as we engage these important issues and remember the poor on Christmas.

Let’s Begin.
