This episode’s special guest is the other half of Life Behind the Beard, Tyran’s business partner, Gary. The two just got back to the States from a much-needed trip to Jamaica to cleanse and purify their lives and get a reset before the new year. They have come to realize that getting out of the country for a few days to a place where they can control their atmosphere has a way of centering them and giving them the clarity and energy they need to jump back into business and life.

Gary is a 4-year veteran of the Marine Corps and he realized after his honorable discharge that he couldn’t work for anyone else and he needed to be in a place where he could be himself and just get stuff done. He believes that unless you are wanting to go into a skilled profession that requires a college degree, college overall isn’t a necessity in order to be set up to be successful in life. The important thing is to follow your passion, to be committed to your work, and to just do your job. Kids these days need to learn valuable lessons like this before they screw up their lives.

Gary and Tyran recognize that there are huge differences in the way today’s kids are being raised and how their parents were raised. Nowadays, kids have no respect for authority and the negative influences in their lives overshadow the positive ones. Instead of looking up to their grandparents and learning from them by example and through discipline, kids are looking up to people that they see on social media and they are being exposed to terrible content on tv at a very young age.

Finally, Tyran and Gary talk about their business relationship and how they have been successful with Life Behind the Beard. Many people say that you shouldn’t go into business with your friends, but Gary and Tyran say that friends you trust and have rapport with make the best business partners because of the built-in accountability and ability to keep each other on track. When starting your own business, Gary’s advice is to read as much as you can and then find people who are successful at what you want to do and seek to be of service to them. This is the best way to learn and to get to know the business before jumping in and risking everything.
