Why Our Drug Laws Have Failed - a podcast by Judge Jim Gray (Ret.)

On April 8, 1992 I did something quite unusual for a sitting trial court judge: I held a press conference. (Judges don't do that!) But as a former criminal defense attorney in the Navy JAG Corps, federal prosecutor in Los Angeles and, at that time, trial court judge for 9 years, I had seen first hand why and how our policy of Drug Prohibition was not working. And who better to discuss it than a conservative judge in a conservative county who had never used any form of illicit drugs. So in this show I will explain my experiences and my transformation from a former drug warrior to someone who favors a policy that reduces the harms that can and will come to societies by the presence of these sometimes harmful and addicting substances. Yes, the drugs can be harmful, but it is the drug money that causes a majority of the problems! (Think about the problems in Mexico!) And, I hope you agree, it is not only all right to discuss these issues, we are perpetuating the problems if we do not!
