When it comes to dating as an adult, do we still have to adhere to the "codes"?

As you know, in our society there are unsaid "friend codes," "girl codes," and "guy codes" that people are expected to adhere to. But when it comes to an individual's happiness, do we have to stick by, toss them out the window, or create our OWN rules for said codes?
